In part 1 of Weight Loss, we talked about the basic fundamental that “you can’t out exercise a bad diet.” After that email, I got a reply from an old patient from Minnesota. She was kind enough to let me share it.
“Hey Doc! How’s it going? I enjoyed this article and what I find even more surprising is that as much as you tell people that you should do more weight training if you want to see results, 90% of the people will still kill themselves on step machines, treadmills and ellipticals. You can also tell them what to eat but if they are not specifically training for a purpose – something they have for a goal, they will never stick to that diet. It’s exactly what it took me to be serious about what was going in my mouth. It’s all about clean eating and weight training. Not Jenny Craig, not trive, Not Isagenix or whatever it’s called, just the all natural eat what you should be eating that wasn’t created by some company to force your body to drop the pounds. Just saying…I’m off my soap box now. Hope you’re doing well!”
She hit a couple of key points.
#1 Free weight training is better than anything else when you are trying for a fitness or strength goal. I’ve only joined one gym in my life and there wasn’t a treadmill in site. Weight lifting can be helpful in losing weight by increasing insulin sensitivity, not burning calories. That’s why it’s the best exercise for diabetics. Weight training isn’t the focus of this series because we have to start with basics.
#2 Real weight loss isn’t about a fad or a trend. It is a lifestyle.
#3 You need a goal, a reason, a burning desire to make a change. Because, being healthy is work. Don’t let any one tell you they have a hack, or a short cut. Most people need to learn a whole new way of living, so you need a reason big enough to get you through the rough times. You can take a pill to force your body to lose weight, heck, you can take steroids. But, there are bad consequences waiting on the other side. Most “weight loss pills” are adrenal stimulants and there is a world of trouble waiting a few years down the road by doing that.
I hope you have your goal from last week. You can’t just say, I want to lose weight. That won’t work. You need the kind of motivation a bride has a month before her wedding.
If you are one of the lucky ones that can exercise and drop weight, this isn’t so much for you unless…
If you stop exercising and your weight starts to go up. There will likely be a day that exercise ceases to work so well. Today, of all days, I was listening to a podcast from one of the top trainers in America. She is now over 40 and has 7 lbs. to lose for a video shoot and is stressed about how hard that is going to be. She eats pretty good from listening to her, so there must be more going on.
I can walk into any mainstream gym in America and find 10 women that workout 5 days a week for 2 hours a day, and can run circles around me, that can’t lose weight, no matter how hard they work. So why do you think that is?
These are the women who suffer and it’s frustrating and it’s not their fault. The world in general is stacked against women. Women have it much harder than men. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t win. I do know that if you don’t start with some of these changes, things will keep getting worse.
So why do women have it so hard?
#1 The world is awash in estrogen. Estrogen makes women, women. Men have estrogen too, but to a much smaller degree, we are testosterone.
(insert Tim the Toolman grunts here 🙂
What does estrogen do? It tells cells to grow. They feed estrogen to cows to fatten them up. Birth control pills increase the body estrogen by knocking out progesterone. Skin care products can be loaded with hormones. It’s not on the label. I had a lab test some for me. Nail polish removers are solvents with estrogen effects. Most environmental chemicals are estrogenic. Most breast cancers are also estrogen dependent. Understanding estrogen is very important.
On a side note, I can always tell a woman with undiagnosed hormone problems because when they do our purification program, they lose less than 10 lbs.
#2 It’s not too often you find a female with a chill lifestyle. Many women have a job, a couple of kids, and a lazy husband 🙂 Nahhh, seriously, women have more stress and busyness than ever. Bad news, this is one of the most insidious problems, because it is difficult to solve. I had this problem and didn’t know it for a long time. Stress can ruin your ability to lose weight.
#3 If a family is short on time, processed or fast food or a trip to a restaurant is a regular occurrence. This is perhaps one of the toughest to over come. We’ll talk later about some quick meals that won’t kill you.
The three biggest problems to weight loss are from excessive carbohydrate consumption, toxicity, and nutrient deficiencies. Remember from before, “You can’t out exercise a bad diet”.
Here is a pretty cool bit of trivia you won’t likely hear any where else. As a person becomes nutrient deficient the first system that goes off line is the hormone system.
Ok, I have to tell you one more thing, because these all relate. If a woman is raised on processed food and already nutrient deficient and exercises a ton, she can become more nutrient deficient. All that exercise takes energy which is made from vitamins and minerals. This is another reason we start with diet and not exercise.
You might be thinking this is getting confusing and way too hard. Well, I’m just giving you a bird’s eye view of why a woman can exercise all the time and not make a dent in her waist line.
All you have to do is want change, really want it. The details will get worked out as we keep going.
How many passes?
If you want to lose weight or you have to lose weight for health reasons, like you are in grave danger of having a heart attack, then you need to understand something called paradigm blindness.
No, we don’t tape DIME’s over your eyes. That would be funny though. This relates to how you see the world or interact with it. If you watched the video and totally missed the gorilla, that is a great example of paradigm blindness.
Ultimately, your beliefs (paradigm) about the world around you can alter how you interact with the world. You can’t see the forest while you are standing in the trees. If I look at myself and see a problem, I eventually realize that I don’t know enough to solve that problem. I get this in the office all the time with people in chronic pain. They don’t know enough or want to change bad enough to get rid of it. That’s why I want you to start with a reason or a goal that you really want.
But, before we start getting specific on fixing things, I don’t want you to self sabotage yourself before we get started. The biggest weight gain season is coming in the next few months if you aren’t ready to do life differently. People gain an average of 5-10 lbs. a year from October to New Years. That adds up and is a very slow way people drift off course year after year.
You can make changes. You have your goal from the first article, and now you need to sit back and really analyze your past. A lot of weight problems have a prior emotional piece tied to it.
Write down any emotional scars you can remember? You will need those in the next lesson. If you are overweight, there are likely some past negative emotions you haven’t dealt with. Remember the lady in the beginning, she got serious about changing her life and body. Many times your beliefs about yourself, your lifestyle, your family are colored by negative experiences. Now, keep going, your future is depending on you cleaning up your past.
Emotional scars: (lets make it easier, write down 3 negative things you’ve said about yourself today) ie..”I’m fat, I’m too tired, I’m bad at…etc”
If you need more space, keep writing.
